Speak Up & Speak Out!
mini research assignment and presentation
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been reading about issues that have compelled people to use their voices to try to bring about change. Issues like civil rights, human rights, workers’ rights, climate change/protection and others have been the focus of many individual and group efforts over the past several decades. These are all important causes, but now it is time for you to find your cause and use your voice.
Think about a cause that you feel is important and worthy of your efforts. You may choose one of the topics already mentioned above, or one of your own selection. Please see me or Miss Diamond for approval before moving ahead. Some other topics you might consider include: LGBTQIA rights, public health/healthcare, equal pay in the workplace, immigration reform, public education, voting rights, homelessness, animal rights…
Once you decide on a topic, you will research your topic and find three suitable sources to work with. You are looking for the following information:
-What is the topic/cause? (a summary of the issue and why it matters)
-What are the problems/effects involved in the issue?
-What is already being done to help/improve the situation?
-How can you and others get involved and help the cause?
What are “suitable” sources of information? It is important to check your sources for reliability and bias before using it to conduct research. Please see attached media bias chart for reference. It is important to stay within the central area of the chart to maintain integrity for your work.
Your task is to create a slide presentation to share with our class and explain your topic.
Requirements are:
Five - seven minute Google Slides presentation 3 points
Minimum of 3 visual aids (photos, charts/graphs, videos) 5 points
The four topics listed above must be addressed thoroughly 12 points
Works Cited slide showing three appropriate sources 6 points
Paragraph reflecting on why topic is important and worthwhile 10 points
Use of class time to research and organize effectively 4 points
