Based on your learning so far, choose a unit that you would consider students ‘constructing’ their knowledge versus a quiz, paper, or test. Consider consulting with a Coach to talk about goals for the unit, the criteria and constraints for the project, and technology to introduce to your students.

Laurence - brainstorming

After reading The Hate U Give. I'd like for students to explore an area that they care about and see what they can do to help. We read about and discussed racial justice, human rights, workers' rights and the right to live on a healthy planet. It is time for students to think about a cause that they believe in and one that needs attention and action.
they will also need to investigate media bias and what counts as a 'reliable' source.
Some ideas I thought about were:
-a commercial to promote fundraising for their cause
-a podcast featuring an interview with someone involved in their cause
-a Google Slides presentation to pitch their topic and why it matters to the class

Brainstorming Ideas for First Grade

These were the first ideas that popped into my head when I thought about constructing their knowledge.

Social Studies
*Community-- Students start by exploring their school community, then explore their local community.

Students can take pictures, or possibly find pictures online, and make place them in google slides as part of a presentation.

* Family -- Students discuss what is a family, how families change over time, traditions and why families are important to us.

Students can use jamboard (?) to draw a family tree. Students can record a short vlog, telling about their family. Maybe students can contribute to a flipgrid about families, but I will have to learn a lot more about this program.

** I think book creator would work well for both of these topics also, as well as,  Writer's Workshop. Looking over the "38" Ways Students Can Create Digital Content", I can totally see first graders - with some assistance, creating a book, comic, comic strip, writing reviews, writing fan fiction or creating a personal logo. All these items, with the exception of creating a personal logo and fan fiction, fall under our current Writing Curriculum.

After looking at the '38 Ways Students Can Create Digital Content' these activities, in particular to the unit I will be entering my students into, are absolutely exciting and would fit perfectly for the content. My students will be reading, in class, the novel STAMPED. This is a non-fiction book that chronicles the history of systemic racism in America. There are SO MANY facts, details, people, etc., in this book that any of the below activities would be perfect for students to go more in depth and explore a particular topic of interest.
  1. Start or contribute to a blog.
  2. Contribute to a wiki.
  3. Record a podcast.
  4. Create a Web site.
  5. Create a vlog (video blog).
  6. Design a digital poster.
  7. Design an album or book cover.
  8. Record a newscast.
  9. Create a YouTube video.
  10. Plan a social-media campaign for a good cause.
  11. Film a public-service announcement.
  12. Animate a story.
  13. Record a poetry reading.
  14. Build an interactive time line.
  15. Host a classroom Webinar.
  16. Create and administer a poll.
  17. Design a map.
  18. Create a time-lapse video.
  19. Design something using code.
