Khan Academy Uses

Khan is great for differentiating! I differentiate when students use Khan Mappers, it is individualized per student. I also use it for helping students with reinforcing math concepts. I also used their Learnstorm activity to help grow student's growth mindsets.

Differential learning

You can assign specific lessons to certain students. For example if a student is having a hard time doing subtraction I would sent them to 2nd grade level and work their way up. Khan Acadmy Mappers is another great way to have differential learning. Students are practicing on their level. Weather it be high or low learning level. It gives student what they are missing in their tool box and fills in it. This Mappers helps them increase their score with the Map testing and help them with the upcoming State assessments.

Students responded to Khan Academy very positive. They described to me like it’s Prodigy but better.

OH MY!!!

I tried using Kahn Academy for some grammar review and it was awful! Students had a difficult time getting the site to load, some students weren't able to login with signal sign on😬 I had groups of students try it in the app and on-line and it didn't seem to make a difference in which one we used the same problems existed!

Once students logged in it took forever for pages to refresh and give students feedback. I tried it with two different classes at different times of the day and it still did make a difference. I didn't even try using it with my third class.

I also dont like the fact that grammar lessons aren't "missions" and can't be assigned to students. I have no way of checking their progress:( Not a resources I would try again, in the near future! 😕

Awesome for math, but can't find a ton of ELA resources.

I've started using it so students can practice grammar. I haven't used it a ton in my class, since their aren't a ton of ELA activities.

I definitely want to explore using khan academy in centers during tier time, having students doing lessons on topics they are struggling with. But again, most of the activities are grammar. My students use this app in math a lot and they enjoy it.

I noticed that some students were kind of zoning out and weren't paying full attention to the videos. I definitely prefer EdPuzzle when it comes to videos, because I can quiz students as they watch.

Next year when I am teaching social studies, I'd like to use some of the social studies lessons.

Khan Academy Reflection

I set up my kids in Khan Academy using Clever SSO. I started them on a module about HTML and CSS. I wanted them to get familiar with it for a couple days, and then use it as an anchor activity during a long project we are doing in 4th quarter. It was *extremely difficult* to get set up. I don't know if was because we were trying to go through Canvas, but the videos were very difficult to load and the site kept crashing. I assigned kids a course, and I could see that I had in my dashboard. But they didn't see that anywhere on their dashboard. There was a notification they they were assigned a mission. However, once they started it and left and came back, they didn't have a way to start it. So they had to search the specific module title. Now that we've gone to the effort to set it up, we will keep using it. I think it would be easier if we had a way to go through the app with SSO. I will play around with that and see if it is possible.

My students seemed fairly indifferent to it. They were "goggled in" but I don't think they were too engaged. Some zoned out during the videos and then didn't know what to do when it came time to do the activity.
