Good vocabulary instruction can and should happen throughout the school day.  This can happen through incidental learning and through explicit instruction.

Informal Conversation led to an idea!

Sometimes those conversations are the biggest building points. I could care less about what the answer is...so when we have discussions that is what I really enjoy. The "Why" or the "Because". If students do this, defend their work, they can have an easier time reflecting on their work.

I had an idea for an assignment that was birthed from the idea of just talking. I started a "weekly reflection" where the students are to write an example of something we learned throughout the week and EXPLAIN it in their own words.

This helps with understanding, literacy, and better peer conversation. There is time for students to share them (everyone has to share one throughout the year) and it leads to good conversation in the classroom.

This kind of reminds me of the "7-Word Talks" where the students could pick what they are going to discuss, and that is why I allow them to choose something that we learned throughout the week.
