Reflections on ChatGPT

Chat GPT is an AI Model/ Chat Bot that has the ability to generate original content when given a specific prompt. Essentially it is a form of AI that has been trained on data from the internet--- but that data is infinite so it’s hard to say where the limits of it exist. Obviously this comes with a lot of positives- it democratizes information, is free of financial cost for users,  it can grow our understanding of certain mediums (like what is art capable of? Or who is capable of being an artist?) but there are a lot of potential negatives that can come with it too, especially if appropriate guardrails are not put in place from the beginning.

One concern that I have as an educator and that I’ve seen with actual students is that they have a hard time understanding that using ChatGPT for certain assignments can be seen as a form of plagiarism. I’ve had students who think because they typed the prompt for ChatGPT that the answer given to them truly is “theirs” and therefore not cheating. It’s a different mindset that I think we will see more of as AI becomes a more integrated part of our lives and individuals use it at a younger age. I also think AI is growing so fast that we are not going to be able to put particular guardrails in place quickly enough (or even know WHAT guardrails need to be put in place) and it feels like once these forms of tech are out and begin to be used, there is no going backwards. It reminds me alot of how we are trying to put boundaries around cell phones and social media with teenagers--- and it can be very challenging.
