Chat GPT is a program based on artificial intelligence.  It uses information from sources on the internet to pull together anything from a letter, an essay, a play, or even a research paper.  It can be used as a way to cheat, where students would just ask ChatGPT to give them an essay about any topic at all, and in return receive a full completed essay.  This is scary, especially for teachers of the liberal arts. Teachers would have to be able to discern whether or not the language used is that of their students. It also can be used as a tool.  I know someone who put in the specifications of a job description and ChatGPT gave them a full, concise job description to be posted on Indeed.  I think if we educate students to use this as a tool and not as a form of cheating, it could be useful.  I can also be useful for teachers.  You can ask ChatGPT to give you a lesson plan, then edit it to meet the needs of your classroom. The one important thing to remember is that technology is imperfect and information must be fact-checked. It also can be used by parents to help their children do work, especially on topics they don't know a lot about.
