Chat GPT is an AI chat bot. Just as you would speak to Alexa at your house, you can ask Chat GPT. By using a language model to simulate conversations with users, Chat GPT can create original computer generated writing.
Concerns that educators have is that what is generated by Chat GPT is not findable by plagiarism checkers. Therefore, there is no way to tell what a student’s authentic work is. With this being said, students may not be as motivated to continue to pay attention in class because Chat GPT can complete the formal/informal assessment for them.
However as teachers, when students get to a certain age, we can use it as a teachable moment. We can show students that not everything is 100% accurate. Students and teachers can use this to create a template to help teaching and learning. Plus after grading papers, who couldn’t use help writing their dinner menu/shopping list after a long day of work.
