Chat GPT is a program created by Open AI. It creates answers based on information it has been programed with and then finds out on the Internet. You can ask it a wide variety of questions or give it nearly any command. From a direct “What is the capital of New York State?” to “Write me a 4 page essay on the life of Teddy Roosevelt citing 3 sources” it will produce what you ask. It isn’t perfect, as at times the answers are not 100% accurate and the information is only up to date to 2021, when the program was written.

I think a concern most educators have, is will students attempt to use this tool as the means to do their work for them. Writing the essays they are asked to write for example, where teachers would be hard pressed to decide whether this was the students work or ChatGPTs.I think questions arise like “Will teachers be needed in 10-15 years?” or “What constitutes original work?” There are many pitfalls that we need to weigh about this topic.

I think the tool can be used in a positive light. For example, you can have students ask it a question and a class can evaluate the validity of it. Teachers can quickly plan lessons and activities by using ChatGPT.
