Part 3 Response

I feel there are many discussions to have with students regarding this technology.  Originality, plagiarism, intellectual property violations, academic integrity… These are all issues that need to be discussed and shown to student that this Chat GPT should not be viewed as a “short cut” or cheating tool for assignments.  Rather this technology should be seen for its true value which, in my opinion, is a research tool.  After playing around with Chat GPT, I would only feel comfortable introducing this to my students as a means of gathering information/resources that can then be used by the student to create their own original work (depending on what the assignment might be).  I am seeing the value of this AI technology as having a virtual librarian or research assistant to make assignments easier and aide in skill building by modeling.  NOT do the assignments for them. Of the 11 strategies suggested by Turnitin I think I could see myself using ChatGPT for “Motivating Students with Tasks Worth Doing”.  This strategy suggests offering original tasks to incite critical thinking and student voice.  Since Chat GPT can take away originality by doing an assignment for the students, I think I would use this in a flipped manner in which I make the students the teacher.  I would have the students input the documents and task for an enduring issues essay and have Chat GPT write the essay for them.  From there I would have students work in groups to use the state grading rubric, evaluate the generated essay, and score it. This will help them better identify areas of strength and weaknesses.  It will help the better understand what the state is looking for as a model.  It will also help them have something to compare to their own essays to better target and trouble shoot thee ares in which they need improvement.

Part 3

  1. REFLECTION: What types of discussions do you feel are necessary to have with students regarding this new technology?
The first thing that needs to be discussed is understanding how the technology even works. Students need to understand that technologies work algorithms and are machines, so they don't always get it "right". So, there is both benefits and limitations of using AI technologies, such as accuracy and biases. Another issue is integrity and plagiarism. Teachers will need to address this with students about the importance of academic integrity and how using AI writing technologies can lead to plagiarism if not used correctly.
  1. EXPLAIN: Pick one or more of the 11 strategies provided by Turnitin and explain how you might use it in your classroom.
  2. I think that this technology will encourage critical thinking and creativity. With a focus on critical thinking, I think we can have students create "new" projects where they synthesize information to create an original product or project that shows mastery of material. It could be used to define various levels of depth on a subject, think-pair-chat-pair-share, grade the AI's response, or debate the AI.
  3. Another way for it to be used is summarizing texts. Some students with special needs to ask variety of questions to get clarification on content or skills.
