After providing coaching to another instructor, I observed the implementation of Proficiency in Sentence Writing
- The success of the lesson centered on the modeling of a sentence formula and the interaction between the teacher and student. Relationships with students are key in teaching. After the teacher modeled how to write a sentence using the strategy, student volunteers wrote sentences after they were given a sentence formula. This made it easy for students to complete the independent section of the formula sheets.
- One of the central challenges of the lesson was the pace of the lesson. The student's attention spans were short and several of them began to get off task.
- To solve the problem with the pace of the lesson, I reminded the instructor of snapping as a class to complete the "rapid fire" review of the strategy and formulas. This is so that everyone is engaged and reviewing chorally. We also discussed setting a timer to keep everyone focused and on task. If the students know they can get the teacher off topic by asking a question, they are prone to keep asking irrelevant questions, this can cause the lesson to be drawn out.
