Math

Shortly after becoming a professional developer, I accepted a position as an elementary math coach with our district. While I have been able to use content enhancement routines with the teachers I support, my ability to use the learning strategies has been more limited. I loved seeing such relevant math professional development offered! Tremendous sessions that I found very useful. Thank you!

LLT---Types of People to Recruit

Loved this advice:

Team membership, what to consider when building the leadership team:
  • People with skills
  • People with expertise
  • People with different areas of responsibilities
  • People with good personalities
  • Need to get the right people at the table

Creating a Playbook for SIM What a great title for this session with Jim Knight. He spoke of strategies and insights regarding coaching.

Jim Knight's session was so appropriate for this particular time in our world and brought to the forefront how very important the "Partnership Principles" are, not only in coaching or teaching, but in every aspect of life. For me, the “Partnership Principles” bring to mind that famous quote  from Robert Fulghum’s book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: And it is still true, no matter how old you are – when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

Addressing Dyslexia w/SIM

Although all of the sessions were amazing, I think my favorite one was Addressing Dyslexia with SIM. I really liked how the presented listed out the characteristics of Dyslexia and then aligned SIM programs and strategies with each. I also liked how she went over various programs at the end.

Implementing Writing with the Teaching the Cause and Effect Routine

Patty did a great job with this presentation.  She explained the connection between the routine and writing and made it sound doable.  Writing is such a challenge for students and is not currently taught explicitly in our state.  Some teachers are interested and using the Sentence Writing strategies, but this will help many of the content teachers to go to the next step in their classes and support all students.   I plan to attend the other session where she speaks to writing in more of the routines, but it will be after the conference.

The CE Approach

The data that Jean shared is really good. This will be information that I can take to administrators as we start sharing information regarding strategies and programs here.We are using the HLP information already here in SC as we revamp our system for addressing the needs of districts. Our plan is based on these principles.
