Comment on Using SIM with English Language Learners---Perfecto! – Beth Lasky, Monica Boomgard, Dorothee Chadda, Sarah Eylands.

I was very intrigued by this session as we are currently imbedding standards to address intervention with students who are English Language Learners in our undergraduate and graduate programs. The session gave some really great examples of SIM strategies and content enhancement routines that professionals find useful in their work with ELL students. I appreciated the individual who began sharing her data and hoped to see more concrete evidence for the use of the strategies to meet the needs of these students. I do use SIM strategies in my courses already. Justifying their use with ELL students requires evidence of impact. I would like to hear more about measurable outcomes.

Are We Truly Personalizing Learning for Diverse Learners? A Critical Interpretive Synthesis of Empirical Studies – Jamie Basham, Ling Zhang

With a background in special education and professional focus on self-determination, I was very interested in the use of self-regulated learning to create a personalized learning environment for all students. In the field of special education with have done this on a small scale with groups of students or in facility schools. In these situations, we used learning contracts and goal setting and attainment approaches. It was very interesting to think about applying the concept schoolwide, for all students. I have worked with districts on the development of self-determination skills through the use of goal attainment strategies which seems to be headed in the direction of personalized learning for all. Dr. Basham’s discussion of personalized learning resources peeked my interested in applying these concepts in my undergraduate courses. We are seeing a shift in student engagement and locus of control that does not lend itself to student success. My colleagues and I have thought of strategies to emphasize the necessity of certain professional behaviors that support success as a professional in the field of education. However, after listening to Dr. Basham I am considering implementing self-regulated learning. I was thinking about offering students the option of accessing content in a variety of ways, but I think using a goal setting process to meet the course objectives and complete assignments along with effort meters and engagement trackers may be a more effective process. It would fit well into our system of developing self-reflective teachers.
