Co- Construct

In our class we had previously used this routine to compare Quadrilaterals and to compare Tax, Tip, and Discount within my class.  During this lesson I compared Equations and Inequalities.  I had previously taught the material so the students were able to recall the similarities and the differences to compare them effectively.

Co-construction of a comparison table

I worked with a colleague to co-construct a comparison table. Our overall concept was reading instruction and the concepts to compare were phonics and phonemic awareness.  The overall construction of the comparison table went fairly smoothly.  In my position as a TaC consultant, my access to students is limited, therefore, my co-construction with a colleague.  My colleague was able to envision how she would be able to use this strategy/tool to instruct other professionals in comparing topics such as IEPs and 504 Plans, and accommodations and modifications.  The table does allow for expansion of ideas and further discussion of related concepts.

Using the Concept Comparison Routine

My coteacher and I used the Concept Comparison Routine in our classes for covering and clarifying information such as McCarthyism vs The Salem Witch Trials, fiction vs non-fiction, simile vs metaphor, and so on. Going through the compare and contrast steps using this graphic organizer proved helpful in cementing different concepts in the minds of students.

Co-Construct and Instruct in a small group practicing reading skills.

The Comparison Table was extremely helpful in working with a small group improve their reading skills. A comparison table looking at the components of fiction and nonfiction was beneficial.
