Understanding and sharing the feelings of others is fundamental to social awareness. It is the ability to empathize. Social awareness is recognizing social cues, understanding social norms, and appreciating the perspectives of others.
Being a reading teacher, I try to choose literature that features diverse characters and situations that can help my students step into the shoes of others. We write often and have open dialogues about how these stories make us feel and how they may or may not relate to us personally. Many of the Fundations Geodes book sets lend themselves wonderfully to these types of discussions and are decodable for my struggling readers.
