My key learning about relationship skills is that kids need to be able to interact (both with peers and with the adults in their lives). Sadly, with our changing times and the impact of the pandemic, more time spent on screens, less devoted family time, etc., it seems this skill is needing more explicit instruction than ever before. I try to encourage relationship skills in my classroom by providing time for group work. Kids learn to work together, listen and collaborate. I try to shift groups so that different leaders can emerge. I also model to the kids how to actively listen and show respect. We work on these skills daily.
