Responsible decision-making… knowing how to make healthy, safe decisions that positively impact self and others.
In class: Well, at home one of my mantras is “Do the right thing, even if no one is watching.” and this mantra can easily carry over into the classroom – don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t hurt someone else. My kids and I were talking about this mantra in the car on the way home yesterday and they told me there’s a “Caught being kind” initiative at their school right now where kids that are “caught being kind” get recognized on the morning announcements. (There was a longer discussion, but we’ll end it here!) This kind of initiative is a great starting point, but I argue that “they” need to be kind all the time, not just when someone else is looking. (This ties into the “honesty and integrity” talk I mentioned in the “Self-awareness” section!)
