Self-management… being able to control yourself and your behaviors in different situations and different social constructs.
In class: “Using planning and organizational skills” is a big thing in seventh grade. It’s the first year of junior high, there are lots more classes and teachers and no “homeroom teacher” to keep tabs on a student. Students need to begin to self-manage to get all their assignments done well and on time. For each unit, I calculate what “pace” the students need to move to complete the things I ask of them in a low-stress/no-stress manner and identify that pacing to the students. Throughout the unit, I will make “blanket statement” reminders about due dates, expectations, etc. but won’t interfere with their self-management pacing unless it is very evident that they need help!
