CASEL = Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning
1. SEL = so important to know about, learn more, utilize, prioritize… now and in the future… lifelong skills - not just “in school”
2. MENTAL HEALTH is SO important to make a priority – there is a huge mental health crisis going on, we cannot continue to “ignore” it. SEL can be one way to “attack” the mental health crisis.
3. 5 social emotional competencies - all interconnected – related to self (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making) and the ways that we interact with others (social awareness, relationship skills) – SO important to self-reflect and do “me” work to help me be better human to myself and others
4. SEL needs to be addressed throughout the community - with families & caregivers, in school, in the classroom… if we ALL work together and are on “the same page” we will be more successful. Mixed messages from different environments is not helpful!
5. I need to tool around the CASEL website to see how to make my classroom a better place… but, again, we all need to work together to make the community (& world) a better place!
Resource that I intend to use: Supportive Classroom Climate… I think that my classroom is a fairly safe place where students feel comfortable taking risks because I do try to lower their affective filters in order to augment language acquisition. However, a lowered affective filter also makes them vulnerable to their peers - some of whom are not always “nice” to them. I need to continue to focus on making my classroom as safe and supportive as possible.
