I chose to read Privilege 101: A Quick and Dirty Guide. Ferguson’s statement, “It’s definitely easier to notice the oppression you personally experience than the privileges you experience, really resonated with me. Another important note that Ferguson makes is that all aspects of our identities interact with each other and that although privilege and oppression intersect, they don’t negate one another. She points out that even though a person may experience oppression they can also experience privilege. Her analogy to two friends traveling by bike on different paths made it easier to understand that privilege doesn't mean your life is easy and that you didn’t work hard, it simply means you may not face the same obstacles others have to.
Being a reading teacher, I have noticed a positive shift in the type of stories available to my students regarding diversity. The purchase of the Geodes for my younger students has helped me provide them with content-rich stories about oppression and privilege but in a decodable format for my struggling readers.
