Summary

This session that I attended talked about the issue of students going hungry and how to combat it by avoiding wasting food. They talked about the need to be mindful of student's who might be in need and how we can help them out. Something that was interesting was that they introduced terms like food desert and food swamp that I hadn't heard of before. When I begin teaching, I think that I would want to be in a rural area so I could see myself having to work with students that things discussed in this workshop might apply to.

In Melanie Adams workshop "Suited for Success" we talked about how to dress professionally as teachers and how to make a resume.

In this workshop we learned how to make a resumé and some of the do's and don'ts of resumés. Some of the do's included putting our field experiences on our resumé and being sure to keep the whole thing to one page. Some don'ts include making it too long and not concise and putting irrelevant experiences. We also learned how to write an appropriate cover letter for the jobs that we will be applying for. We also talked about how to dress professional. I learned that it is more important to dress professional as a young teacher so that you can earn respect from students and parents.

Summary of Learning

In this webinar, we learned about helping students become competent as global citizens. Host Cindy Derrane told us about the Global Citizenship club at her school, Norwood High School in Massachusetts. The club focuses on global citizenship, and includes things like foreign language literacy and volunteer work in organizations concerned with international needs.  

I think this information is extremely important in regards to teaching students to be more aware of the world around them. I actually am planning on going overseas after I graduate to teach in international American schools, which means that this information will be extremely important to me. I think that most students in my future classroom will need to be able to connect with people around the globe in order to effectively use the information they learn, and I think the global citizenship program is a great program to teach that.

Reframing Classroom Management: The Classroom Consensus

I learned how important it is to have a good understanding of managing your classroom in order to allow your students to reach their full potential. In a survey they did, over 70% felt like they did not receive adequate training on dealing with behaviors in the classroom. Teachers have indicated that they want to leave the profession due to this lack of preparation for classroom management. Younger children are learning the differences between home environment and school environment, which can affect their behavior. Power struggles, lack of self-regulation, and new rules or routines for children can all make classroom management difficult. Students want to have teachers who respect them and care for them in the ways that they need them to care for them. When reframing classroom management it is important to do four things: understand and distinguish behavior, rethink control and power dynamics, be proactive instead of reactive, and respond to the child and not the behavior. Understanding and distinguishing the behavior is important because you must understand why the child is acting the way they are before you can react to the behavior in a helpful way. Students need to know that you, as their teacher, respect them. That is why it is important to say encouraging things to the student that give them the idea of the classroom being a community, not just owned by the teacher. It is important to be proactive because if you only react to the negative things that your students are doing, it results in power struggles and the feeling of defeat. A teacher should do positive things to help fix behavior problems before they become issues rather than wait for them to happen. Responding to the child's needs is the best way to make the student feel cared for. Doing this allows for the child to know that you want to help them and find a strategy that helps them rather than just get them in trouble for the things they do. figuring out why your student is acting a certain way by getting to know them is the best way to handle behavior problems and gain a better classroom management style.

Storybooks Webinar

I did the "Teaching About Technology with Storybooks" webinar leaded by Dr. Theresa Cullen at the OU college of Ed. For me as a language arts student it was so exciting and relevant to participate in this webinar as I am an international exchange student and in my country there is not much technology in elementary classrooms. so i learned how to to teach about technology and important concepts of it using storybooks or literature. Dr. Cullen gave some really nice examples of how to do so as she had many  books for children on the desk that even can inspire students to consider technology as a career.

Webinar Summary

In Dr. Cullen's webinar about teaching technology using kid friendly story books, I learned more than I ever thought I would. Not only did I learn that there are various and numerous ways to teach technology, but that as of now that teaching has a very heavy gender bias. I want to use this in my future teaching to empower girls and teach to everyone's potential.

How to be an Ally

I watched this webinar that was all about how educators can be an ally for their students. It included some great information, some great articles, and resources, strategies, and how it starts with self-reflection. Change does not happen overnight and many people who think they are an ally, are not actually being an ally. Deep self-reflection on our own identity is what helps to start the process. Making your classroom environment and community a safe place for students to be themselves is extremely important as well. Finding ways to honor differences and incorporate those differences into your classroom and curriculum can make a huge difference.

Summary

I learned the benefits of FlipGrid. This webinar focused on the importance of hearing from all of your students in a discussion or lesson. Instead of teachers having students raise their hands to ask questions or to reiterate how they know the information being taught, students can use flip grid instead. Teachers will be able to get their feedback immediately to ensure proper learning. Also, teachers around the world can team together and watch other flip grids for more information and to see how other students are using it. I can use this now as a student to look at existing flip grids and see how students are using it and how I can eventually work flip grid into my lessons. As a future teacher, I will use this as a way to get immediate feedback from my students in class, instead of hoping that everyone understands.

Summary of Attendance

In Dr. Cullen's webinar over Teaching about Technology Using Storybooks, she explains a wide variety of story books to broaden our student's learning. What really caught my eye is that there were not many girls in coding books before recently. The Barbie as a Computer Engineer was insulting and inspired me to make sure my female students are also exposed to the science world along with their male peers.

Summary of What was Covered

For this Webinar, Teaching about Technology Using Storybooks, Dr. Cullen explained how different books can be used as learning tools for students. Most of the books shown in the webinar were for lower grade levels, specifically the elementary grades. However, Dr. Cullen did show a few books that could be used for the middle grades; despite this, the teaching techniques she talked about are universal.

Imovie

In this workshop we first learned about some of the different tools IMovie has to offer such as the different audio features, cutting features, and video filters. We then watched multiple examples IMovie trailers. After learning about how we could use the trailers we then created our very own in groups of four. My group decided to create a tour of the college.

Attendance

I learned quick edits on iMovie. These included taking sound out of videos, splitting clips, adding voice overs, etc. I also learned about creating iMovie trailers. The movie trailers would be useful in my future classroom. I can have my students create book trailers instead of book reports and pretty much incorporate any other subject. I can use this now to create my projects for classes and do presentations over certain subjects. For example, I could’ve used it in Literacy over comprehension development.
