I will be honest that I personally don't love cold calling on students for information (I was always called on when I didn't know the answer and it gave me so much anxiety), so I've never really paid random name generators much thought. However the video brought up some great ways to use the random name picker in other ways.
1. Using it for rewards/who gets to run an errand. This is such a genius idea because students always used to fight over who got to fill my water bottle or bring something to the office.
2. I love it for randomizing groups. My favorite part of quizlet, was that groups where randomly assigned and students had to actually work together. This would be so helpful when groups are needed for other activities. It's awesome that you still have some control over the groups
3. You can jigsaw the students so they will be able to share amongst different groups.
4. Love the idea of using if for seating charts, but still have control over making sure kids are getting their mods/not near someone that would cause disruptions.
5. Absolutely love that there is a timer feature on the group section! It's hard when you need the kids looking at multiply windows, so that streamlines quite a bit.
