Formative assessment is a very laid back (typically on the fly) style of getting feedback on a particular lesson, content, or material. This could be done by a show of hands on who understands or is confused, or by an exit ticket, or by asking a student to try to explain the material back to you or to another student. Formative assessments are not graded, just used for feedback.
Summative assessment is essentially the exact opposite. It is typically understood as a high-stakes event, in either quiz or test form. Summative assessments are graded and usually carry significant weight, and often take a class period to complete. The goal of summative testing is to understand the students' level of comprehension, typically before moving on to a new lesson/unit.
