Formative assessment: testing student learning during the semester to see how they can improve on their learning and instruction. Students can use these assessments to gauge the areas needed to improve and teachers can use it to check for understanding. You use formative assessments continuously throughout the semester. Types of Formative assessments are drawing a concept map, submitting one or two sentences identifying the main point of the lecture, and turn in a research proposal.

Summative assessment:
Evaluating the students learning at the end of a unit. Students can use these to gauge progress of grade-level goals and benchmarks while teachers can use it for grade level promotion and end of the year grading. Summative assessments tend to be more points and can consist of midterms, final projects, or final papers.
