Great instant feedback tool

This is a great tool that will allow students to get instant feedback when they are trying to master a concept. I love how you can retry a practice session as many times as you want to improve your score. Plus there are hints and videos embedded into the program to help students when they get stuck. I see myself using this often to help students get comfortable typing math for online assessments and to build confidence as they try and master skills.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is great to use when a student needs extra help or more explanation on any subject.  It is great because they can watch the video several times if needed to grasp the concept.

It's okay

Kahn Academy gives me the ability to assign a very specific and detailed set of tasks to my students.  However, it does not let me differentiate and assign different tasks to different students within the same class.  I've used it with my small group of Sting students this fall since Kahn Academy is a reputable resource for showing success with remediation.  I chose to assign a section of ratios and proportions to the students.  I clicked on 5 different subtopics associated with ratios and proportions to assign to students, which resulted in assigning over 100 separate tasks (videos, practice and "quizzes") to all of the students.  Once I realized this, I had to go back and deselect a lot of the tasks.

In addition, the students used Kahn Acadamy for several days and were not excited at all about the site.  The videos were okay, but the practice was confusing.

vocabulary

These short videos provide precise in depth meanings for scientific vocabulary such as biodiversity hotspot.  This will be used to introduce new vocabulary to students or as an easy access reminder of the the new scientific verbage.

Further explanation of difficult concepts or half for homebound students.

These videos are great for students who are struggling with difficult concepts (to hear things from another's point of view).  These videos are also a great resource to students who are homebound are are absent from class explanations.

Kahn Academy

Kahn Academy has lessons and quizes for all levels.  You can use this in class to flip learning and/or give extra support when needed.  It also could be a good tool to share with parents.  They could use it to help explain math at home to their child when stuck.  I know I have used it to reteach myself so I could do math with my own child.

Khan Academy

I can use Shan Academy to review a skill.  I like how it gives students another way to learn the concept if they do not understand the way I presented the information. I like it because it easily links videos into google classroom.

Khan Academy thoughts...

I have used Khan Academy videos to review a concept or show students a different strategy than what I have already taught.  They like the shortness of it and it's great for a quick warm up or review with a face other than my own.  I also like that it can sync with Google Classroom and I can get weekly updates.

Instructional Videos as math lesson starters

I've used Khan Academy videos as a way to begin math lessons.  They are short 3-5 minute videos which are great to introduce a topic and vocabulary students needs for the lesson's foundation.

Thoughts

I would use Kahn Academy to supplement a lesson.  I see it as more useful in math than other subjects.  It definitely reinforces the lessons and gives students the opportunity to watch a video, stop and take notes, and get practice.

How to use Khan Academy

I have used Khan Academy in the past and continue to use it. It's a great resource for students to learn how to solve Math problems using standard algorithms and as a nice review resource. I have had my students watch the videos prior to coming to a lesson with me and even afterwards.  I have left them for students when I have a sub because it is a great resource.
