Praise types and effectiveness

Public
Specific, unconditional
"Great job today class, I really like how you all got right to work and kept your focus. See you tomorrow"

Private
Specific, unconditional
"Amazing job Johnny, you were a great motivator when you saw Sue needed help. I really appreciate you going over to explain the assignment to her. Have a wonderful night.

With each type of praise the person that is doing the praising needs to be specific about what it is they are happy about. There also needs to be no conditions left at the end like, I'm happy now but if you don't continue this behavior I will not be happy tomorrow. This takes away from the great behavior of that moment.

The most effective types of public and private praise are specific and unconditional

The most effective type of public praise would be specific and unconditional.  An example of that would be, "Well done everyone, you guys rocked today getting lined up."

The most effective type of private praise would also be specific and unconditional.  An example of that would be, "Well done, you used your time in study hall well." Smile and say, "I'll see you tomorrow."

There are more affective types of praise we can use for our students.

The most effective type of public praise is specific and unconditional. An example of this is, well done everybody, you worked really well as groups on your Industrial Revolution posters. The most effective type of private praise is specific and unconditional.  An example of this is, addressing an individual student: well done writing your "I Have a Dream" essay, you did a great job coming up with a main idea. You smile at them and then they are off to their next class.
