CLLI Reflection

Dr. Renee Calhoon and Dr. Patty Kohler-Evans hosted CLLI in July 2025. During this time, I was able to learn about the history of the KUCRL and MCL. I also was able to ensure I had a clear understanding of CER, LS, and XR--both the similarities and differences. Common vocabulary was essential during the CLLI, along with an in-depth understanding of what reading intervention (that is evidence and research based) could look like in a school using the Content Literacy Continuum. We did a deep dive into all 5 stages. There was also a focus on learning how to best teach and coach adult learners. While adult learners are similar to students, there are distinct differences that must be addressed in order to have a successful PD. Dr. Calhoon and Dr. Kohler-Evans both gave me situations that they had encountered and asked what I would do in that situation. This was probably one of the most beneficial aspects of CLLI.

Reflection on CLLI

When I attended the Content Literacy Leadership Institute, I was unsure about a lot of things with becoming a Xtreme Reading Professional Developer.  That was a commitment I did not think I was ready for.  I found out that I was ready for the commitment because I believed in Xtreme Reading and what it had done for my students.  I saw firsthand how this program works with carefully planned strategies that had a set instruction on how to teach the strategies to students but also teach the teacher how to roll out all eight strategies with fidelity.  I had great PDers who taught me, and I know I have to carry on that professional development to other people who want to learn how to achieve student growth by using Xtreme reading with my lower-level students and show success.  Xtreme Reading works as long as you following the instructions for each strategy and not skip any steps or create short cuts.  The students will not have the same the outcome.  The CLLI help me on all levels to give me confidence and prepare me to become a Xtreme Reading professional Developer
