Reflect: What from the TedX video caused you to think more deeply about becoming a mentor?
The quote “Have people stand on your shoulders so others can see further than you can see.” really resonated with me because as educators we are always sharing and using ideas from other colleagues. I think I could have as much to learn from my mentors as we did. I also think the idea of passing the baton is a strong way of thinking about mentoring. We are trying to pass on what works for us to the next generation of teachers.
Reflect: From the Self-Assessment Inventory, what stands out the most about the questions and your answers?
I connected to my mentor's kindness and willingness to answer any and all questions I had. Even past our official time and mentor and mentee, they still were there to bounce ideas off of, give support and help. I know I can be an open ear to ideas and with a objective mindset and able to either share my thoughts, or help my mentee find the right person to help if I do not have the answers. My biggest concern is not being able to get them the help they need.
Reflect: What do you believe you might need help with as a mentor in our school district?
I think the biggest thing I will need from the district is time. In beginning of the school year there is so much happening and so much that needs to be set up and figured out. I want to make sure that I have the time to not only get my program set up, but making sure that my mentee is feeling confident and comfortable in the role they have.
