“The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth.” – Dan RatherThis quote resonates with me because I remeber being a new teacher and being empowered by and administrator (Susan Krickavich) to use my voice. We were in a district wide meeting, creating outcomes for our students district wide. The initaitve was called outcomes based education (OBE). I was talking to myself about an idea I had. She was sitting behind me and she said, "Say it!" Here I was a second year teacher and they wanted to know what I had to say on the topic. This was empowering, inspiring that my voice mattered and that what I had to say could have an impact district wide. This was the "poke" I needed to find my voice as an educator. To speak out and make a difference. Thanks to her, I have been able to speak out for my students and collegues alike for my entire career. When people are made to feel valued and empowered, they can advocate. This is what a good mentor does.
"The mediocre mentor tells. The good mentor explains. The superior mentor demonstrates. The greatest mentors inspire!" –Lucia Ballas Traynor
This quote also stood out to me because I want to be a mentor that inspires...Inspires people to be great at their craft. To learn that they hold the power to make a difference in the world because they made a difference in the life of a child. We need great educators in this world and we need to inspire greatness. This is not just a job...It is a calling.
