I did a few different searches while using ChatGPT. One way that I used it was to ask ChatGPT to write a short story (800-1k words) using multisyllabic words featuring particular prefixes that I’ve been reviewing with my students. It’s kind of amazing what it’s able to do. I’ve used this prompt in the past and then altered the prompt to be at a particular reading level, but sometimes I’ve found the stories to be less interesting than something I can find online (although those obviously wouldn’t have the same targeted word selection). I find it to be useful, it’s just that sometimes you have to keep putting in more specific prompts to really get what you want.

I think ChatGPT can be an incredible resource for teachers. It’s a great starting point, but I think for it to be most effective you really have to keep perfecting or specifying your prompt to really hit whatever goal you are trying to achieve by using it. If it’s just a quick 1 and done search that isn’t read over carefully or modified--- it may be lacking depending on what you need it for.

I think along these lines there could be space for students to use it to practice things like specificity in writing or even how to practice editing as a writing skill. I think it can also be taught to students to be used as a tutor of sorts--- it can be very effective at creating study guides or notes, providing practice questions before tests, etc. If students are given the opportunity to be shown this side of the program and then repeatedly practice using it in this way, it could be very helpful.
