I chose to explore the video “Gender Shades” under the topic of bias to learn more about how AI can be influenced by bias. It was eye opening to me in regards to addressing gender/race bias that is presented in AI.. It is a problem that affects many people in education and the workforce. The idea that AI (especially with facial recognition) does not recognize certain races or that it easily misgenders is cause for great caution.. These biases will allow direct instruction about bias in AI and help them recognize that AI does have faults; no matter how integrated it has become in all of our lives.
In the classroom use of AI, I think our impact can be greater trying to find ways to impact the data that goes into the large language models. As an elementary teacher, I have had great experiences with many of our ENL students. My colleagues and I have been working to ensure the use of immersive texts, videos, and conversations into our lessons that reflect all of our students, especially when these types of things are a large part of our everyday lives. Unfortunately, biases are a part of our world today, so it makes sense that we see them in AI as well.
