So,
G is a 5 year old boy and is in my group since he was 3. He is very pampered, and manipulates the entire family. He had a heart surgery when he was 6 months old, everything went fine but parents didn't have, still don't, too many expectations for him. Doesn't matter if it is a drawing or a coloring ... every work is beautiful,even if it is just a scribble. At the age of 4 he had his second heart surgery. He was absent for 3 months and when he came back again, no expectation for work, everything was awesome. Of course, the boy was happy and alive, what else would they want?
But in fact he was not learning and neither developing his writing and reading skills. Math was not that challenging for him but he was really struggling academically. He was simply not interested in letters at all, specially because English is his second language.
So, I scaffolded as much as could. I rethought him 2 sounds, asked him to classify objects by beginning sound and the next time we would work, the following day, I added a new sound and corresponded objects. When he had 5 sounds I started to put the letters together and asked him to sound them out, when he realized, he was reading his first CVC words. This empowered him SO MUCH, that he wants to do work everyday, I don't need to show him a work, he chooses the ones he already did and does new ones together with his friends.
To write his CVC words I put the objects on the rug and instead of putting the box with the whole alphabet for him to work, I just put the letters he would need, but now a days he is transitioning to work with the box with the whole alphabet.
He knows half of the alphabet, is practicing his handwriting, is coloring inside the lines, is completing his work circle in other words, his stamina is rocking and G is developing his writing and reading skills!!! Hopefully parents will support this change at home as well and change their mindset, to let G grow with responsibilities.
