I implemented the Fundamentals in Sentence Writing Strategy during the 2024-25 school year. Starting in October, I worked weekly with a group of 3rd graders in a special education pull-out classroom. The group size was about 8-10, with varying attendance across some students and students with initial IEPs starting up through the spring. The students who were able to start and work throughout the year progressed to mastery of the 4 forms of Simple Sentences, as well as the Adverbs lessons.
During this school year, 2025- 26, I resumed working with the group of students who are now in 4th grade using Proficiency in Sentence Writing. Some new students joined our group, and there are still some issues with attendance that impact individual progression through the LS stages. At this time, students are working on Controlled Practice of Compound Sentences. Since we had some new students join the group, and were coming back from summer break, I began instruction in the PSW strategy with Simple Sentences. We are on target to complete the 8 stages of PSW before SC Ready testing begins the first week of May.
