General Description:
I provided instruction to three middle school English teachers at Powhatan Middle School in Powhatan County, VA, on 8/18/2021. The three teachers attended the training in person. Susan Trumbo, (Active SIM Professional Developer) attended the training via Google Meets.
The three teachers were all English teachers - one 6th grade, one 7th grade, and one 8th grade. Each has an Intervention class block they are teaching during the 2021-2022 school year.
Successes: All three teachers had a strong understanding and knowledge of simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, and compound-complex sentences. During the training session we were able to focus on how to teach these concepts to students using the PSWS.
All three teachers participated actively in the instruction session, asked good questions and felt confident in what they were going to be doing next.
Challenges: The main challenge I faced during instruction is that I worried I was overly explaining things that they already knew. I didn't want them to be bored nor did I want to take up some of their valuable time with information that they already knew.
Adjustments: Due to the strong foundational knowledge of the three teachers I provided training to, I did pick up the pace of the training and we went through the Example Slides for the various steps pretty quickly. I also shared with teachers some tips such using dry erase boards for practice and using online educational game platforms such as Kahoot and Quizizz to practice.
Problem Solving: During the training, I was able to provide personal examples and tips when teachers had questions on implementation. Susan Trumbo also attended the training session via Google Meets and she helped problem solve and answer questions as well.
