We have successfully used the frame in our math classes. Our students had some difficulty making it their own at the beginning; however, they are much more invested in the process now. When we started using the frames, they consisted of long definitions and descriptions. We have found that keeping it short and simple is much more effective.
We often use pictures instead of words. This has simplified the process and has made the use of framing more accommodating for students who struggle with note taking. We often use a frame for study guides for tests. We have a difficult time getting students to review their notes before a test. The use of a frame has condensed this to a single page in which to study from. We feel this has been the most effective use of the framing routine for our students. However, we continue to mix it up and use it at the beginning of a unit or even build it throughout the unit. Our students have been very receptive to the use, and are engaged and actively participating during its use.
