We have used the Concept Mastery Routine to introduce the concept of "Cold War" to our English 10 students. This was part of the preparation/background for reading the short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury. The students were engaged and the time was well spent.
We used the Concepet Mastery Routine with our English 11 students to introduce the concept of Gothic Literature as a part of American Literature of the 1800s. This was helpful to our students because their understanding of "gothic" relates to the current use of the term "goth" and most had misconceptions of the elements of gothic literature which was based on pop culture movies and books such as Twilight.
