Collaborate with Coach

During the fidelity of implementation process, I have had frequent conversations with my coach, Ginni Bussey, about the Concept Mastery Routine.  She continually gives me positive feedback and is supportive of completing the micro-credentialing.

Ginni Bussey gave me effective feedback.

My mentor was really supportive during my instruction of the Concept Mastery Routine to my university 100 students.  Due to time constraints, I had to ask for more time to allow for extension of knowledge with my students.  Ginni was very flexible, allowing me to review the content the following day.  She also discussed with me how I needed to be sure to maintain clarity between the characteristics and examples.  Overall, the class was engaged and enjoyed the lesson.

"Overall, your video was fantastic. Your students actively participated and you successfully demonstrated how to use the Routine in a co-taught classroom. Comments from our coach: Excellent modeling of how to use Concept Mastery with Team Teaching. Your video clearly demonstrates both of your understanding of the use of the Routine. You did a nice job drawing responses out of your students and giving them ample to respond. Repeated use of the Routine will speed up instructional delivery. Your students did an excellent job maintaining focus and participation while co-constructing. Your “Cueing” and “Doing” were very strong. Next time, try to work in more time for “Review” (see p. 12 and 25).

Coaching Feedback and Follow up

Feedback Statement:
As per the VDOE SIM Micro-credential Badge Requirements, I am writing  to verify  Kate Martin and Maribeth Lowe from Wilson Memorial High School in Greene County, VA  have completed the steps to earn the Level 2: Fidelity of Implementation Badge for Concept Mastery.  

Kate and Maribeth co-constructed a device with students that successfully engaged students in an interactive dialogue, that involved a high level of student engagement in a safe, reinforcing learning environment that led to student understanding of a concept often found challenging.  The co-teachers implementation included appropriate scaffolding  of student elicited responses, guiding/leading of students in developing a stronger vocabulary in the discussion of the characteristics, and connection between key words/ characteristics, and the development of a definition.

Engaging with coach

Mary Stowe agreed to coach me through learning and using the concept mastery routine.  I talked with Mary on several occasions in preparation for my observation.  She was available to respond to any questions I had about using the concept mastery diagram.  Her experience was invaluable.  Following the observation Mary met with me the same day.  We talked through my reflections and she add her feedback.  She was very positive and encouraging and had some great suggestions from her experience.

Engage with Coach

My coach, Susan McGilvray, encouraged the history teacher and me to work together on this lesson.  She checked in with us to be sure we had everything we needed to implement the routine.  She also provided support when we had questions.  She was impressed with how well the implementation went given the fact that I do not typically work with the class that I taught this to.  Susan and I have worked on developing other concept mastery diagrams together so that I have a new comfort level with the routine.  Susan is always willing to help and provide any support needed.
