There are 5 Core Social Emotional Competencies.  These are fundamental skills that we should strive to achieve.
The 5 Competencies are Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making.  Following is a brief insight into each competency:
  •  Self-Awareness is about understanding yourself and your emotions.  Once you can recognize your own emotions then you can learn to manage your own emotions.  It is important that one develops positive ways to manage his own emotions.  Once you are able to manage your emotions then you can begin to build relationships with others.
  • Self-Management is about regulating yourself and being able to understand and manage our own feelings.  It is the understanding of how we are feeling and to make positive choices to deal with our feelings.  It is being able to cope positively when things are not going as planned.
  • Social-Awareness is the ability to show understanding and empathy for others, or otherwise stated as "putting yourself in someone else's shoes."  It is important to think about how our actions affect other people.
  • Relationship Skills involve how you get along with other people and how you deal effectively with conflict that may arise.  This competency requires other skills such as communicating and negotiation.
  • Responsible Decision Making is when you take the time to consider all of your choices and the consequences of each choice.  Making good decisions requires you to bring together many skills at once.  It is important that you think about how your actions will affect others.
The primary goal of social & emotional learning is to help students establish and maintain healthy relationships.  Teaching these skills early on will benefit students throughout their lives.
