Dr. Cullen's webinar on books

The webinar on books was extremely insightful to me. Throughout the webinar, Dr. Cullen introduced and gave previews of some books that were focused on addressing the ISTE standards. The one book that really stood out to me was the book about a girl named "Dot". This was a book about a girl who related the digital world to her world outside and how she can do/enjoy both. I hope to have several of the books mentioned in the webinar in my future class library.

Webinar with Dr. Cullen

I participated in a webinar hosted by Dr. Cullen. In this webinar we learned about different books that include ISTE standards. One book that Dr. Cullen suggested that stood out to me was "Girl Code." This is a novel about high school girls who create a group over coding. I need to do more research over the book and I would like to find more books for high schoolers to read about technology and the responsibilities that come with it. Reading is going to be important in my future classroom, so I would like to make sure that they are getting something from. This way, they can learn about technology also. Dr. Cullen suggested us to acquire our books from garage sales and retiring teachers.

NASA Workshop

At the NASA workshop, we learned how to use cheap and convenient products to create simple physics projects for almost any grade level. We also learned how we could incorporate other areas of study, such as Social Studies and Mathematics as well as critical thinking, problem solving, team-work, presentations, and paper writing.

Summary

We learned how to incorporate technology learning without technology in the classroom. A great way to incorporate technology lessons is through literature. There are many books made for children to get students interested and learn about technology and programs. There are specific books on things such as coding and different soft wares. There are books geared for student interest and teacher lesson planning. There are some books that link to soft ware. If a student is interested in the program after reading the book, they allow the student to check out the software on their own time and explore on their own time.

Summary

Today I learned how to use quick edits in iMovie and then how to make a trailer. As a teacher I could see myself creating iMovie trailers to introduce concepts and projects into my class, or as an intro video of the classroom to show at Meet the Teacher night. I could also see myself having my students use iMovie for projects in and outside of class.

Summary

In this workshop I learned about the app animatic. We learned the purpose of the app, and discussed different ways we could use the app in our classrooms. We were shown multiple examples, and then asked to create our own. I created a video of a flowers life cycle. It was a lot of fun.

Bullying and Bias from Teaching Tolerance

Through this webinar, I learned that the percentage of students who were suspended were mainly male and/or African American.  In comparison to Caucasian males, the percentage of suspension for African American boys is double.  The percentage also increased when disabilities were put into consideration. Therefore the entire response was asking how we could change this.  First off, we need to be aware of our bias within the classroom and throw out zero tolerance policy. Therefore, as a teacher, I need to keep my students within the classroom and avoid suspension.  Instead, I need to come up with an agreed upon consequence for all my students for misbehaviors.

Evidence

I attended an animation workshop. I can use this to make ideas come to life. For example, I can draw out the water cycle and have it move. I also think this is useful to make notes and lectures more entertaining for children.

Summary

With Dr. Cullen's webinar, I learned more about how to incorporate literature with technology into my curriculum as well as how different texts may apply to different standards, both OAS-ELA and ISTE. Hearing from the two students is also beneficial because, as peers, they propose a diversity of ideas from people like me.

Tech Books

This seminar was about how you can integrate technology into the classroom and teach about it even if you do not have access to technology. Dr. Cullen shared very interesting and useful books that teachers can read to their students about technology, bullying and diversity. This is a great way for student to relate to the topics that are being taught.

NASA Workshops

In this workshop, we learned about Bernoulli's principle lesson by doing hands on activities where we played around with air pressures to see how it affects certain objects. Alongside with the lesson, we use Nearpod to contribute ideas and thoughts. It seems like Nearpod is a easy app to use and helps keeps students on track with the learning concepts and allows them to engage in discussion.
