Identifying the skills:
The goals of this badge were to be knowledgeable in the process of t-shirt making. I used my old knowledge in using Adobe Illustrators to design the illustrations that I want on my t-shirt. I used the new knowledge learnt at my internship like screen preparation, screen printing and screen cleaning to transfer the design from the screen onto the t-shirt.
self monitoring:
I know I was successful in this task because at the end of my internship I have made two shirts designed and printed by me. I also know I was succseful because I did the hole process at least three times with very few error.
strategy selection:
One strategy I used for succeeding in the screen preparation part of the process was painting the screens with this think pink sprint that your design will be put on. To apply the paint to the screen you had to carefully put the paint into the applicator which was a metal hollow cilinder that was split down the long way and one of those halves would be filled with the pink paint and with the long edge of the half colander you would press firmly against the screen and till it towards the screen so the paint got on it. Once the paint was touching the screen you quickly but firmly had to swipe to cover that whole side and you would do this to both sides of the screen twice. After being dried the screen is ready to get your design put onto it and onto a shirt. Another strategy Was used in the actual screen printing part of the process and I don't know what it was called I think it's just called screen printing and many things and techniques fall under that name in this shop. Screen printing was probably the most nerve racking part of the whole process because if you mess up a shirt there is no going back from it and you can't fix it. Also paint was used in this part of the process and the paint is made to stick to clothes and stay in the clothes for a very long time so we had to be extra careful with our clothes which made it extra stressful. So this part of the Process you connect your screen to a machine that holds it still so you don't mess up while you're trying to manually print a shirt. After securing your screen you put paint on the screen to ready the paint to be pressed. Place your tshirt on the platform under the screen. Grab a rubber blade and you push down and pull towards you to make the paint go through the screen and onto the shirt and when you lift the screen your design is on The t-shirt.
Knowledge transfer
This knowledge can be applied to my own life if ever wanted to start a brand of some sort I can now start with printing t-shirts because thats how my mentors assistant started his brand and he was using those manual screen printing machines at the start. This whole process of screen printing made me very curious about things in the shop and how they work so I was more eager to asked question which definitely improved my communication and asking questions skills that can be applied to almost anything both in and out of school.
