Function of Behavior derived from Four Forms:
Escape- the child behaves in order to get out or avoid something they do not want to do.
Ex: Child throws things on the ground. The child is not expected to complete the work. The child learns that throwing an item will get them out of the work.
The cause could be a lack of motivation or the lack of skill. The goal is to increase compliance and positive prompting by taking a step back from the task that is difficult and going to an easier one first. Or starting a task that requires the skill that the child has.
Attention-Seeking: child wines until they get what they want from the adult/parent/teacher.
Ex: Teacher/Parent is talking with another child, the child throws something and the parent/teacher tells the child to pick the item up. The child gets the attention from the adult because they were spoken to.
Access to Tangibles: Child acts in a certain way in order to get what they desire.
Ex: Child points or asks for candy. Parent says "no" and the child wines or cries. Parent purchases candy. Child learns that winning gets them the desired item.
Automatic Reinforcement: The child acts in a certain way that makes them feel good, often relates to sensory behaviors.
Ex: When a child has an earache, they scream or cry (not due to an outside factor). Due to an experience they are having inside.
