Self-Directed Learner
The Self-Directed Learner Exemplary Performance Award seeks to recognize those juniors and seniors in the Tahoma School District who truly exemplify the qualities described below.
Self-directed learners have a growth mindset and are confident that through work and
practice they can learn new things and develop new skills. They are curious,
recognizing when gaps in their understanding exist and when new learning is
necessary. In these situations, they set a purpose for the learning and
identify success criteria so they can monitor their progress and recognize when
they’ve achieved their learning goals. They create and implement action plans
to meet their goals and can anticipate and address challenges to achieving
them.
Self-directed
learners take advantage of multiple resources for
learning (research, experts, media, networking) and ask questions and seek help
when needed. Showing persistence when challenges or setbacks arise, they
recognize that learning is often a recursive process. In fact, they expect to
make mistakes along the way, focusing on error recovery instead of failure
avoidance. They take ownership of their learning by regularly reflecting on
their experiences, knowledge, and skills to assess their progress and adjust or
set new goals as needed.
