Educators need to prepare students for the digital age by teaching essential skills like digital literacy, critical thinking, and coding. Encouraging collaboration, real-world projects, and soft skills such as effective communication is crucial. Global awareness, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning are emphasized, alongside promoting responsible technology use and cybersecurity awareness.

Computers have impacted our world

Computers are changing so rapidly. It is important that we have the latest technology in our districts for students to explore. Such as letting them 3d print, create robotics, and different shop items using technology. The exposure is so important. Everything is electronic from banking to ordering a Uber. It still amazes me that Elon Musk got approval from the FDA to test microchips in humans as a means to connect to the internet. This will be a whole new path for students if it works. So, we as educators have to find new ways to educate students. especially in smaller rural districts where something like Uber is not a thing.

It is unavoidable, and due to the efficiency of it, those who oppose will be left behind.

We must learn about how computing will create problems for our world, so that we can have proactive solutions for our youth.  There are many very negative sides to all of this, mostly focused on the mental health area.  A digital friendship is not a real one, and kids don't understand that, for example.

On the positive side, our workforce is going to need to be competent in computing, as it will be a prerequisite skill for most jobs.  It is our job to balance it all for our students.  It is crucial more than ever to provide a setting that nurtures real relationships while delving deeper into the aspects of computing..

Impacts of Computing

Wow - What a powerful video!  Showing the parade from the 1900s with just one car to the 1913 parade just showing one horse and saying that was when things were moving slowly was such an eye-opener.  I have never been to an Amazon Go - but that was amazing to see!  I did recognize the Robots in the beginning - they belong to an Amazon distribution center and you can take your kids on a virtual field trip there.  It was quite a great interactive field trip.

Technology truly is changing the world we live in and I know I will be blown away with what comes up in my lifetime.  I don't even know if today's kids can see how much the world will change in their lifetime.  They already have self-driving cars - I think of a show from my youth called The Jetsons - how far off are we from our flying vehicles?  It's scary and exciting all in one, which is why it is so important to start educating children when they are young about technology and its impacts of it.

I did read a comment left by another participant talking about a wifi washing machine.  Although I don't have that, I do have a Smart oven I can turn on remotely.  This is VERY beneficial when we are out late for my kid's sporting events etc. I also have a robotic vacuum that cuts down on the times I have to do it on the weekend.  These are things I didn't even think were possible when I was a kid!  Amazing!

The world is rapidly changing

Our world is changing at a rapid pace.  It is unbelievable how much technology has been integrated into our lives.  I just recently experienced this when trying to buy a new dryer.  I wanted something simple and basic, but it was almost impossible to find.  Everything is "smart" and can be linked and controlled by my phone!  At first, I was turned off by this because I feel like the more technology there is, the more things can go wrong.  But then I thought about how cool it would be to be able to turn the dryer on or off when I am not home.  It could be such a huge energy saver.  I realize that technology has so many benefits.  As shown in the video clip, technology can make things faster and more efficient. I have shopped at an Amazon Go store in NYC, and it blew my mind that I could just take whatever I wanted and walk out, and later get an accurate receipt right to my phone.  I have also been the beneficiary of robotic surgeries, which can be much more precise than traditional surgeries, requiring less tissue damage/trauma and a speedier recovery.
There is a cost to this though.  Places like Amazon Go, and even the kiosk ordering at McDonald's reduce or eliminate the need for cashiers and other employees.  This means there is going to be a shift in the workforce and the skills required of employees.  They may play roles more behind the scenes.  Students need to be aware of these changes and how it will impact their futures.  They need to be trained in skills which can help prepare them for the tech future.  Instead of being the cashier taking orders, they may need to be trained in how to repair or program the computers doing that job.  We need to shift our focus to prepare students for the jobs of the future.

Future of Work

Computers and the internet have transformed our world in countless ways, and have become essential tools in almost every industry. As teachers, it is crucial that we prepare our students to succeed in this ever changing digital environment. Here are some ways that we can help ensure our children will be ready for the world of tomorrow.

One of the most effective ways to prepare students for the future is to incorporate technology into their education. This can mean using interactive whiteboards, tablets, or laptops to facilitate lessons and engage students in the learning process. In addition to learning traditional subjects, students must also develop digital literacy skills, such as how to evaluate online sources, use social media responsibly, and protect their personal information online. Teachers can help develop these skills through explicit instruction, modeling, and discussion.  Creativity and problem-solving skills are becoming increasingly important for future job success. Teachers can help students develop these skills by providing opportunities for project-based learning and problem-solving activities that require critical thinking and collaboration. Teachers must stay up-to-date with the latest technological advancements to effectively prepare students for the future. This can mean attending professional development workshops, using social media to connect with other educators, and being willing to experiment with new tools and technologies in the classroom.  Lastly, with the pace of technological change, it is important that students understand that learning does not end with their formal education. Teachers can help instill a love of learning by encouraging curiosity, providing opportunities for exploration, and emphasizing the value of lifelong learning.
