Social- Emotional Learning is essentially how young people acquire the knowledge to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is important because it helps students balance and understand their emotions and how their actions can affect others. It helps kids relate to one another, have empathy, and be successful in the world.
2. How is integrating SEL into the curriculum different from traditional education?
SEL takes a step back and "examines the whole child" by incorporating lessons on self awareness, self management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness into the curriculum. These essential skills are then applied to classroom academics and incorporated into daily lessons, to create a learning environment based on trust, collaborative relationships, and meaningful instruction. "SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities."
