Competency based learning is a great alternative to our standard grading system. Our standard system is an archaic system that does not provide a rigorous evaluation of what students actually are learning. Many students can circumvent the evidence needed when achieving a grade on an assignment. Competency based learning would provide a more specific guide to accomplishing the essential tasks needed. With this basis of learning teachers can also provide several different avenues for students to showcase their knowledge. Students can also build portfolios towards an end goal of total competency at a level. With guidance in the future students could be able to create their individual learning experiences, set to utilize their learning strengths. Technology affords teachers the opportunity to expect created knowledge from students giving them various methods to show competency in an area. Students can use apps to create knowledge and use constructs they see in everyday life such as video to showcase their learning. When students are given freedom to create they are more apt to take ownership of their learning and the responsibility to expand that knowledge. Many students today rely too heavily on the teacher to give them what it is they need to know and are lost when expected to create. This idea will take some time to instill in students but with the proper support and tools students and competency based learning will provide a stronger education, and one where there are fewer gaps in basic knowledge.
