The main key design in assessment is alignment, differently to what it used to be in the past when the key was variety.

Alignment is key in assessment design.

Though variety is important; without alignment variety has no value. Standards and benchmarks, learning targets, assessments and instruction must be aligned. Assessments must provide evidence of students' proficiency with the learning targets.
