Artifact 1: Reading and interpreting MSDS (SDS) information

Find and annotate an SDS for a given reagent. You should identify the following information:
  • Appropriate PPE (gloves, respirators, lab coat, etc.)
  • Special work area considerations (hood, glovebox, etc.)
  • Proper storage conditions
  • Proper waste handling and cleanup.
Your assessor will verify on at least 3 occasions that you understand the safe storage of substances and their safety precautions.  This can be done by either:
  • Passing short MSDS (SDS) interpretation questionnaires
  • Correctly responding to MSDS (SDS) interpretation questions orally by your assessor
  • Writing a risk assessment document for the reagent addressing PPE, work area, storage, and cleanup.
Artifact 2: Correctly storing reagents

Properly store reagents on at least 3 occasions (and then consistently).  Verify that the reagents are not expired or in damaged containers.  This can be verified by your assessor directly or via video.
In a short written statement explain the importance of proper storage, citing examples.
On at least 3 occasions properly label reagents in new containers.  This can be verified directly by your assessor or via video.

Artifact 3: Proper Reagent Handling

Follow correct safety protocol according to the information contained on an MSDS (SDS), this can be verified through video or direct observation by your assessor. You should demonstrate the following:
  • Appropriate PPE (gloves, respirators, lab coat, etc.)
  • Special work area considerations (hood, glovebox, etc.)
  • Proper storage conditions
  • Proper waste handling and cleanup.
Explain orally or in written form the reasoning behind the lab environment setup, citing SDS as necessary.

Artifact 4: Safe Workspaces

Do a lab walkthrough and record photo or video of potential safety hazards. Provide oral or written explanation for why these are safety hazards and how to correct them.
