SIM: Past, Current, and Future Supported Contributions

As a SIM Professional Development coordinator, presenter, and coach in Georgia, I have had the opportunity to organize and present numerous professional learning workshops within Forsyth County Schools (FCS). Over the past ten years, teachers in elementary, middle, and high school have attended workshops and implemented strategic interventions within their schools to promote student understanding and close academic achievement gaps. During the 2021-22 school year, 20 SIM PD workshops were presented to FCS teachers. For the 2022-23 school year, secondary teachers who teach study skills, literacy, or ELA resource will have the opportunity to register for a year-long SIM Intervention Cohort focused on developing teacher knowledge in MTSS, content enhancement routines, and learning strategies. With a team of 8 FCS SIM PDers, another 18 SIM PD workshops are being offered throughout the school year for those teachers who are not cohort participants.

In the summer of 2021, I had the opportunity to co-present two CLLI sessions with other PDL apprentices. Collaboration with current PDLers and PDL apprentices was a rewarding an memorable experience. For the upcoming 2022 CLLI, I am thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to co-present once again. I look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate with other PDers on future projects.

During the 2022-23 school year, my position with FCS will be changing. In addition to leading PD workshops for FCS teachers, I will also be working with homeschooling groups and private schools within our district. This community outreach (encouraged by federal proportionate share requirements) will provide these groups with opportunities to attend SIM PD workshops and develop knowledge of CER and LS within the private sector.

For the past three years, I have worked with a private school in a neighboring district and presented SIM PD workshops to the staff: SIM LS Overview, Fundamentals in Sentence Writing, Proficiency in Sentence Writing, and Inference Strategy. Recently, other school districts have reached out for academic intervention support. I have guided instructional coaches in Paulding County Schools, Cherokee County Schools, and Colquitt County Schools. In the fall of 2022, SIM PD workshops will be held for Cherokee County and Colquitt County teachers. Both school systems have requested help with incorporating SIM LS and CER within their districts.

As a SIM PDL, I look forward to continuing to support the vision of SIM and promoting implementation of CER and LS in order to minimize or close academic achievement gaps so that students can thrive and succeed.

Current Work in SIM

1.  FL SPDG - I currently serve as SIM Professional Developer  for the FL SPDG.  I work with several professional developers to conduct both Learning Strategies and Xtreme Reading PD.  Since joining the SPDG, I have provided PD with Janet Atallah and Rosanne Arvin for the Xtreme Reading Florida Cohorts 2 & 3.  I have also provided PD with other SPDG PDers in Learning Strategies. In addition to providing PD, I coach a group of teachers in both Learning Strategies and Xtreme Reading.  In 2021, I co-presented with Janet Atallah at the Florida SIM Update.
2.  University of Central Arkansas Mashburn Center for Learning - For the last three years, I have provided Xtreme Reading Professional Development for the AALI at the Mashburn Center.  This year, I am offering on-line PD for the Rosebud School District in Arkansas.  I am also in the process of trying to develop an online PD module for Xtreme Reading.
3.  KUCRL - I have provided PD this school year for the KUCRL in Montana, New Mexico, New York, and will soon begin a project in Maryland.  I also serve on the Xtreme Reading Cadre, helping to provide resources for Xtremeville.  I was fortunate enough to receive the Jan Roth Spirit Award at the 2021 SIM Conference.

Commitment to serve

The Strategic Instruction Model has had a highly significant impact on my practice as an educator. I firmly believe it is one of the strongest sets of tools available to support teachers in serving all learners. As a PDL, I am committed to providing ongoing professional development and have committed to serving as a facilitator for the 2022 CLLI.  I am committed to actively contributing to the SIM Network. I currently serve on the Leadership Pathways Workgroup. I have presented at multiple International SIMposiums and regional SIM updates and am willing to continue to contribute in this way. I am available as a resource for groups wishing to pursue the Course First! Model for Content Enhancement Routine Professional Learning having facilitated an overview with Jocelyn Washburn this past year. I regularly share resources I have developed or helped develop through the Florida SPDG to support SIM Implementation. I am committed to building positive relationships and learning communities within the network that will expand access to SIM across the nation and the globe. I am committed to supporting KUCRL in continuous improvement and would be eager to be involved in a workgroup or other related efforts to leverage instructional coaching to support SIM implementation. Through my work with Florida SPDG, I have had the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of implementation science and apply it to capacity building through leadership and infrastructure development. I am prepared to support KUCRL in exploring the use of implementation science to grow SIM.
