My first introduction to KU-CRL SIM Strategies was at Meredith College Summer Institute after my first year of teaching in 1989-1990. The Professional Developer providing the instruction was Mary Anne Tharin who was, at that time, the Learning Disabilities Consultant with the NC Dept. of Public Instruction. The strategies I learned then were implemented in years from 1989-2023 in various settings with ages spanning from adolescents to adults.

A description of implementation with one of the Learning Strategies I taught was with adults who had text anxiety and were preparing to take the GED test. The instruction in the Test Taking strategy helped them understand and simplify an unknown for them. After instruction in the strategy, they expressed that they were more at ease and felt better equipped and prepared to sit for the exams. I remember clearly their excitement and empowerment upon completing the Test Taking strategy instruction. I also taught this strategy to high school students and planned the transfer and generalization of their use of the strategy with other teachers in the school. They initally earned extra points for demonstrating use of the strategy.
