Knowledge of IDEA

Be careful what you agree to in an IEP Meetings because you have no choice but to abide by the binding agreement.  Many times IEP meetings infringe on the many other things teachers need to do, so we are quick to accept proposals from parents.  Many times the cumbersome tasks that you must complete skew your time away from helping the group and you are left with few if any choices.

Tribal Leadership

This book is all about building a thriving organization but it lends itself well to a school environment. It talks about the different stages of tribes.

  • Stage One: The stage most professionals skip, these are tribes whose members are hostile—they may create scandals, steal from the company, or even threaten violence. "Life sucks."

  • Stage Two: The dominant culture for 25 percent of workplace tribes, this stage includes members who are passively antagonistic, sarcastic, and resistant to new management initiatives. "My life sucks."

  • Stage Three: 49 percent of workplace tribes are in this stage, marked by knowledge hoarders who want to outwork and outthink their competitors on an individual basis. They are lone warriors who not only want to win, but need to be the best and brightest. "I'm great, you're not."

  • Stage Four: The transition from “I’m great” to “we’re great” comes in this stage where the tribe members are excited to work together for the benefit of the entire company. "We're great."

  • Stage Five: Less than 2 percent of workplace tribal culture is in this stage when members who have made substantial innovations seek to use their potential to make a global impact.

It has been so interesting to read this book and think about what stage I am an as well as my school community.  This book talks a lot about how to nudge people from one stage to the next. I definitely think this is a must-read for anyone interested in leadership!

Tech doesn't replace 1:1 convos

We are so technologically blessed in our district, and I love exploring the tools on a regular basis.  Although I do a lot of communication electronically, I need to remember to follow up with individuals to ensure my message was received the way I intended.

Parent interviews

The class covered the ways to use parent interviews in developing IEPs.  The interview outlines we received gave some interesting questions about parenting students on IEPs.  It helped me create stronger relationships with parents by using the form.

I gave the interview outlines to other teachers to help with interviewing parents.
