Franklin Act Already!

We have been doing a book study all school year called Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain by Zaretta Hammond, I also read this book becasue of FUSE this past summer. We have had small group meetings, and whole staff meetings. Also like I mentioned before is the Franklin Conversations about Race. Now most staff have embraced the book study and the Conversation series but a small few has not, and more has to be done to do better.

Book Study

Some of my close colleagues and I want to start a book study with The Person You Mean to Be. I really want to make this happen and use the resources from this challenge to ensure that we have good conversations. I am going to take it upon myself to make sure that this book study happens.

I am currently participating in a group book study with a focus on race and equity. We have opportunities to discuss race and equity with peers that are both reading the same title (White Fragility) as well as others who are reading additional titles around the same topic.

Access to Opportunity

I encourage students to take advantage of any opportunities to learn and I ask colleagues, who have information to assist students, for their resources. I also tell students to prepare themselves to intervene on behalf of their own children should they have any. The better educated they are, the easier time their children will have in school. The better education they have, the more opportunities they will have, as well as their children. Knowledge is power and it puts you in a place where you can control your own outcomes.

If students are having difficulty with school content, where can they get help?  If they are having trouble with transportation to school, where can they get help? If they are being harassed in school, where can they get help?

I tell students those teachers who want to teach their classes and help them learn, are their friends, not their enemies.

I tell students that if someone doesn't like you because of you color, creed, ethnic origins or gender, outperform them!

If a staff member doesn't like you, the best way to show them up, is by being their BEST student.

A successful businessperson will hire the person with the best skills, not the person who they think has the best look.

I got this book in the school mail a year or so ago, and haven't been inspired to read it yet. Now is the time!

I was part of the “For White Folks That teach in the hood” anti-racist book study during the summer. Each week we would meet and discuss the required section of the book, and then get a chance to talk with others reading other books. It was amazing to hear what others were reading, and one of the books was “White Fragility”. I ordered it on my nook, then never actually read it. I talked with some of my co-workers about it, and this summer we plan to read “White Fragility”, and if there is an option for a book study we plan to join it.

A few co-workers and I have decided to dig into White Fragility. We all bought the book during covid but didn't end up reading it together!

These are images and quotes from a book study that I did on White Fragility by DiAngelo. They reflect some of the themes I found important.

Conversation

Tomorrow my daughter is visiting my school from a suburban district to consider whether she wants to transfer here for her senior year. I know this will prompt conversations about race with my students and I look forward to answering their questions about race and equity in schools with different demographics!
